Dr. Karma Tenzin

Dr. Karma Tenzin is from Trashi Yangtse, a district in eastern Bhutan. He earned his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He also holds an MD(Doctor of Medicine) in Basic and Clinical Physiology from Banga Bandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Bangladesh, and completed two year-long Fellowship in Medical Education and Research at GS Medical College, Mumbai, India.

 

Dr. Tenzin began his career in clinical practice before transitioning to medical education, administration, and policymaking. He served as Acting Dean and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education in Bhutan for over seven years(2016-2023).

 

One of his major achievements was leading the establishment of Bhutan’s first medical school in October 2023. He also played a key role in developing competency-based curricula for both undergraduate and postgraduate clinical medicine programs in Bhutan and introduced a robust assessment system through introduction of work place-based assessment. Additionally, he was instrumental in creating Bhutan’s first medical journals, the Bhutan Health Journal and the Bhutan Sorig Journal.

 

With over 60 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Tenzin has significantly contributed to clinical and medical education research. He has also served as a consultant for medical institutions in Cambodia and worked on Bhutan’s Multi-Stakeholder Action Plan (2023–2027) with the Public Health Foundation of India. Dr. Tenzin has received multiple national and international grants for his work by partnering with experts from Germany and USA.

 

At the moment Dr. Tenzin is working as Senior Lecturer for Medical Education assessment at School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia.
